Volunteering

Mulligans Flat–Goorooyarroo surveys

Are you a keen naturalist in the Canberra region? We are always looking for skilled birders and herpers to help with:

  • Annual reptile surveys (March)

  • Bush stone-curlew census (September)

  • Woodland bird surveys (October)

  • Eastern brown snake radiotracking

In some cases, these opportunities may be paid.

Woodlands and Wetlands Trust

The Trust has a range of volunteer opportunities at Mulligans Flat, Wildbark, and Jerrabomberra Wetlands.

Opportunities are often seasonal and require varying levels and types of skill, experience, availability, and fitness. You can register your interest in their Better Impact volunteer database.

Citizen science

Contribute your wildlife sightings

If you'd like your wildlife observations to support research and conservation, consider using these platforms:

  •  iNaturalist: Easy to use and great for beginners. Requires a photo, offers automatic species suggestions, and has a large user base. Records are reviewed by the community, but not always verified by experts.

  • NatureMapr: Ideal for Australian regions and local projects. Requires a photo, and all records are verified by local experts. Data feeds directly into government biodiversity databases and the Atlas of Living Australia.

  • eBird: Best for confident birders. Does not require photos and allows structured bird lists. Submissions are reviewed by regional experts and contribute to global bird research.

Every record helps build a clearer picture of our local biodiversity—happy spotting!
